Account Health Monitoring
Account health monitoring is the continuous, automated tracking of usage, engagement, and relationship signals on every customer account. Unlike a quarterly health score (a snapshot), monitoring is the real-time pipeline that watches for inflection points: usage drops, support escalations, executive sponsor disengagement, integration failures, sentiment shifts. The output is a dashboard view per account showing trend lines, not just a number, so the CSM sees DIRECTION (improving, stable, deteriorating) — not just magnitude. Without monitoring, you discover problems at QBRs or renewal calls. With monitoring, you discover problems within hours of the first signal.
The Trap
The trap is monitoring 50 metrics on every account and ignoring 47 of them. Teams build elaborate dashboards with daily active users, weekly active teams, feature adoption rates, support ticket counts, NPS, CSAT, login streaks, integration health, and end up so overwhelmed they default back to gut instinct. The other trap: monitoring without alerting. A dashboard nobody opens is not monitoring — it's a museum. Real monitoring pushes signals to humans (Slack alerts, email digests, CRM tasks) the moment something crosses a threshold.
What to Do
Pick 5-7 vital signs per account (not 50). The default core: (1) DAU/WAU trend over 30 days, (2) feature breadth adoption, (3) executive sponsor login frequency, (4) open support ticket count + sentiment, (5) NPS or CSAT trend, (6) days since last value event (renewal, expansion, milestone). Each vital should have a green/yellow/red threshold. Wire alerts to fire when an account moves from green→yellow OR yellow→red. The CSM should get NO routine reports — only exceptions. The system pushes; the human only intervenes when the system surfaces a deviation.

The most overlooked signal is 'time since last positive event'. A customer who hasn't shipped a new use case, hit a milestone, or expanded usage in 90 days is in 'static decay' even if absolute usage looks fine. Static accounts churn at 2x the rate of growing accounts.

Always show TRENDS, not snapshots. An account at 70% health declining from 90% is in much worse shape than an account at 65% health rising from 50%. The dashboard MUST show the 90-day trajectory line, not just today's value.

Set up 'alert fatigue' tracking. If your monitoring fires 50+ alerts per CSM per week, you're training the team to ignore alerts. Tune thresholds quarterly so each CSM gets 5-10 high-signal alerts per week — not noise.

Reality
Marginal value of signal #20 is near zero, and the cognitive cost of watching 20 signals is enormous. The best monitoring systems track 5-7 vital signs religiously, not 50 metrics ceremonially. Signal selection IS the work — each new signal must displace an existing one or meet a high bar.

Reality
